When are auditions?  Where do I go?

Auditions are September 8 and 9, 2026 @ 6:30PM at the SCT Playhouse: located at 518- 1^st Ave. E. in Spencer.  Doors open half an hour prior to stated audition time.  Please note that it is not necessary to attend both audition times; one or the other will suffice.

Who can audition? What kinds of roles are available?

Roles are available for women and men 18+. Roles and character descriptions are listed at the end of this announcement!

What do I need to bring with me?  Should I prepare anything in advance?

Please be prepared to read selections from the script with other actors.

You’re welcome to read the script beforehand- they are available for checkout at the SCT Business Offices. If you would like to check a script out, please call 712-262-7336 and schedule a time to stop by. Our regular business hours are Tuesday-Friday.

Closed Auditions:

Auditions for Rehearsal for Murder are closed, meaning that only the individuals auditioning and the Directing/ Management team of the production are allowed in the audition space. 

About the Show

What’s this show all about

This is a thrilling “theatrical” mystery in which SCT becomes the set for the play. The playwright turns on the stage work light and prepares for the first reading of his new play. The actors, producer, director and others connected with the show come onto the stage, and under their humorous (and utterly real) theatrical talk, tension grows. We discover that everyone connected with this play was involved with another play by the same playwright. At its opening night, exactly a year ago and in this same theatre, the beautiful leading lady, who was also the playwright’s fiancée, was murdered! As these people start with the new play, startling connections to the murder begin to unfold. The growing tension reaches the boiling point with surprising revelations, countered by others even more surprising. The dazzling, yet basically logical twists build to a climax and solution that are theatrically stunning! 

When are the rehearsals?

Rehearsals are generally Sunday through Thursday, 6:30pm to 9:30pm at the theatre.

Not every actor is called to every rehearsal, it depends on your role. Starting on October 25^th (Tech week) and through the run of the show, everyone is called.                                                                                                        

When are performances?

October 30, 31, November 1, 5, 6, and 7, 2026.  Sunday, November 1 is a 2pm matinee; all other dates have a 7:30 curtain

Production Casting Notice

Lead Roles

• Alex Dennison (Male, 30s – 50s): A brilliant, charismatic, and sharp Broadway playwright. He is driven by intense grief and a calculated obsession to solve his fiancée’s death. He commands the stage.
• Monica Welles (Female, 30s – 40s): A glamorous, elegant Hollywood movie star trying to establish her serious acting credentials on Broadway. She is striking, complex, and appears primarily in flashbacks.

Featured Roles (The Suspects)

• Lloyd Andrews (Male, 30s – 50s): The director of the play. Highly capable, sharp-witted, and fast-paced, but operating under intense professional and personal stress.
• Bella Lamb (Female, 40s – 60s): A wealthy, sharp-tongued, and sophisticated Broadway producer. She is fiercely protective of her investments and hides deep financial anxieties behind a glamorous exterior.
• Karen Daniels (Female, 20s – early 30s): A beautiful actress. She projects the innocent, sweet image of a young ingenue, but possesses a deeply ambitious, calculating undercurrent.
• David Mathews (Male, 20s – 30s): The handsome, exceptionally conceited leading-man actor. He is deeply self-absorbed and highly protective of his public image.
• Leo Gibbs (Male, 30s – 50s): A character actor and comedian. He is somewhat awkward, physically distinct, and holds an abrasive, cynical attitude toward his former colleagues.

Supporting Roles

• Sally Bean (Female, 18 – 25): Alex’s new secretary and assistant. Fresh to New York City, she is bright, naïve, eager to please, and deeply in awe of the theater world.
• Loretta (Female/Flexible, 20s – 40s): The efficient, no-nonsense stage manager. She keeps the theater running smoothly and has a very grounded, practical personality.
• Ernie (Male, 50s – 70s): The longtime theater doorman and custodian. Wise, observant, and dependable.
• Frank Heller / Lieutenant McElroy (Male, 40s – 60s): A dual character or dynamic character actor who shifts from a struggling performer into a calculated authority figure.

Ensemble / Cameo Roles

• Mr. Santoro / Moving Men / Police Officers (Flexible, Any Age): Short speaking or non-speaking roles that help execute the physical action and the final trap of the play.
