About the Show

What’s this show all about?

It follows young dreamer Orpheus as he journeys to the industrial underworld to rescue his lover, Eurydice, who sold her soul to Hades for security, while also exploring the broken relationship between Hades and Persephone.

Roles Available

Cast Size: Medium/Large (15 to 40 performers)

Dance Requirements: Standard

We are seeking actors with unique, vibrant singing skills, particularly adept with jazz/rock/gospel styles. Reminder: All actors cast must be between the ages of 14-19 on opening night.

ORPHEUS: High Tenor with falsetto up to G#5. (A2 – F5).

Orpheus is an optimist, an idealist, a counter-culturalist. Orpheus should feel unique and have the sensitive soul of an artist. Plays guitar.

HADES: Bass. G1 – Eb4

Lord of the Dead. Powerful, immortal and deeply in love with Persephone. Strong authoritative presence. Tyrannical and a bit menacing.

PERSEPHONE: Alto/Mezzo. (E3 – C5).

Goddess, playful, mercurial and fun. Persephone is not too feminine and lets her sharp edges show. She is the seasons and is cut from the same cloth as Orpheus. She must have a wryness and intelligence that she uses sharply for both entertainment and as a defense mechanism.

HERMES: Tenor/baritone. (D3 – B4)

Hermes is the narrator/guide/emcee of the story. Charismatic, often mysterious, with a trickster-ish quality.

EURYDICE: Alto/Soprano. (E3 – E5).

A practical leading heroine with an extremely vulnerable underbelly, a haunted bird. She takes the leap to the underworld as a step towards something reliable. There is both toughness and delicacy in her being and her singing; she uses a belt for some songs, real subtlety for others.

FATE 1: (F#3 – E5)

FATE 2: (G3 – E5)

FATE 3: (F3 – C5)

Powerful and dark. Operate as one of the “voices in the heads” of the other characters. Fates should be skilled with harmonies.

WORKER 1: (F#3 – E5)

WORKER 2: (E3 – C#5)

WORKER 3: (B2 – B4)

WORKER 4: (G2 – G4)

WORKER 5: (C2 – G4)

The workers’ ensemble populates the world above and below ground, representing the spirit of both labor and community.  We are planning to cast more than 5 workers to be in the ensemble

Deegan Children’s Theatre

Mildred “Middy” Deegan was a devout and avid champion of the arts. The generosity of the Deegan family has created a prestigious legacy of education and theatrical experience for the children in our community and beyond.
The naming of the Basil and Mildred Deegan Children’s Theatre at SCT honors the gift of two generous patrons of the theatre. The Deegans’ gift planted the seed for the Children’s Theatre Endowment Fund and secured the future of youth programming at SCT.
Both Northwest Iowa natives, Middy grew up in Sutherland and Basil in Peterson. They married in 1936 and moved to Sulfur Springs, IA, where Basil owned and operated the Sulfur Springs Grain Company. Basil and Middy loved kids, and believed strongly that children should have a chance to pursue big dreams.
Upon retiring, the Deegans moved to Spencer and became longtime Contributing Members of Spencer Community Theatre. Although Basil passed away in 2000, Middy continued to enjoy attending SCT productions with her friends, before relocating to Iowa City to be near their daughter.
When looking for a way to give back to the community they loved, a gift to Spencer Community Theatre made perfect sense. Endowing the Children’s Theatre at SCT united Middy’s love of the arts with Basil’s commitment to education, and meant their legacy would be a personal one. Middy passed away in 2020.
Spencer Community Theatre thanks the Deegan family for believing in a bold dream— that SCT will forever be a place where children discover the magic of theatre.
