for the Deegan Children’s Theatre at Spencer Community Theatre’s production of

“Into the Woods”

 will be held on Monday May 19 and Tuesday May 20, 2025 @ 6:30pm

Call Backs will be on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 @ 6pm

 

About Auditions (Where do I go? What do I do?)

When are auditions?  Where do I go?

Auditions are held at SCT Playhouse: located at 518- 1st Ave. E. in Spencer.  Doors open half an hour prior to stated audition time. Please enter thru the South Doors.  Please note that it is not necessary to attend both audition times; one or the other will suffice.

 

Who can audition? What kinds of roles are available?

Roles are available for teens ages 14- 19. Roles and character descriptions are listed at the end of this announcement.

 

What do I need to bring with me?  Should I prepare anything in advance?

Please be prepared to sing a 90 second cut of a musical theatre song of your choice.  Please bring your backing music track with you to the audition; we have Bluetooth speakers.  You may also sing acapella.  If you do not prepare a song, we will provide one for you.

For callbacks, you will be asked to sing a song from “Into the Woods”.

You’re welcome to read the script beforehand- they are available for checkout at the SCT Business Offices. If you would like to check a script out, please call 712-262-7336 and schedule a time to stop by. Our regular business hours are Tuesday-Friday 10am to 5pm/ Please be prepared to relay any potential conflicts-there will be room on the audition form for you to list your availability.    

 

Closed Auditions:

Auditions for “Into the Woods” are closed, meaning that only the individuals auditioning and the Directing/ Management team of the production are allowed in the audition space.

About the Show

When are rehearsals?

 Our first rehearsal will be an initial meeting on Thursday May 22 @6:30pm. Regular rehearsals will start on Tuesday, May 27 @ 6:30pm. The regular rehearsal schedule is Sunday through Thursday from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, and run later during tech week. Not everyone is called to every rehearsal.  A schedule will be provided to you.

Please note: we have a no cell phone policy during rehearsals and performances. 

 

When are performances?

Performances are:  July 10, 11 and 12 @ 7:30pm and July 13 @ 2pm.

Where are performances?

Performances will take place in the SCT Playhouse at 518- 1st Ave. E.

The feckless Giant killer who is ‘almost a man.’ He is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed.

Browbeating and weary, Jack’s protective mother who is independent, bold, and strong-willed.

The Baker

A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He wants his wife to be happy and is willing to do anything to ensure her happiness but refuses to let others fight his battles.

Vain and gorgeous, he is a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing.

A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world.

About the Show

What’s this show all about?

Set in the 1980’s, Rumors is a riotous comedy by Neil Simon that takes place during an elegant dinner party hosted by New York’s Deputy Mayor. When the guests arrive, they discover a gunshot wound and a missing spouse, setting off a chain of mistaken identities, cover-ups, and outrageous rumors.

The play contains strong language; it is intended for adult audiences.

Rumors is directed by Kyle Goeken.

When are rehearsals?

Rehearsals are from 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM Sunday-Thursday, although they will run later the week the show opens. Rehearsals begin Sunday, January 12th at 6:30pm and run until the show opens on February 21. Not every person is called to every rehearsal; the time commitment typically depends on the size of the role.

 When are performances/strike?

Performances are: February 21, 22, 27 28 and March 1 at 7:30 PM, February 23 at 2pm.

Set strike is Sunday, March 2 at 1pm. Company dinner will follow.

Character descriptions (ages are flexible):

 Chris Gorman: F,  32 to 40 — Ken’s elegant and attractive wife. A bit high strung. (This is a large role.)

 Ken Gorman: M,  32-40 — A well-spoken, handsome attorney. A bit high strung. (This is a large role.)

 Claire Ganz: F,  30-45 — Lenny’s gossip-monger, attractive wife. A Westchester, New York housewife type. (This is a large role.)

Lenny Ganz: M, 30-45 — An accountant who has just wrecked his brand new BMW. Irascible, sarcastic, and very likeable. (This is a large role.)

Ernie Cusack: M, 40-60– A smug psychiatrist. (This is a medium role.)

Cookie Cusack: F, 40-60– Ernie’s wife and a cooking show host with a bad back. She has a very dramatic, physical personality. (This is a medium role.)

Glenn Cooper: M, 32-50 — An ambitious, polished man preparing for a run for the state senate. A Kennedy-type. (This is a medium role.)

Cassie Cooper: M, 20-35 — A jealous type who believes in the healing power of crystals. Glenn’s trophy wife. Insecure, sexy, shrewish. (This is a medium role.)

Officer Welch: M or F,  35-50 — A vigorous, straight-talking, veteran police officer. (This is a small role.)

Officer Pudney: M or F), 23-31 — A rookie cop. (This is a very small role.)
